چکیده

Achievement of a good performance in a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of a particulate flow has been restricted to a low particle Reynolds number below a few hundreds due to the limitation of computational load by using a fine grid (Harada and Gotoh, 2008). Hence, in this study, to perform numerical simulations in higher particle Reynolds numbers, a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) by Smagorinsky model has been introduced into a solid/liquid two-phase flow model to reproduce a Sub-Grid Scale (SGS) turbulence. In addition, we have performed a numerical simulation of a settling process of graded particles in still water with and without LES to highlight the effect of turbulence. This model will be useful for prediction of diffusion of sediment cloud induced by construction of block mounds.

Large-eddy Simulation of a Particle- Laden Turbulent Channel Flow

Large-eddy simulations of a vertical turbulent channel flow with 420,000 solid particles are performed in order to get insight into fundamental aspects of a riser flow. The question is addressed whether collisions between particles are important for the flow statistics. The turbulent channel flow corresponds to a particle volume fraction of 0.013 and a mass load ratio of 18, values that are rel...

Numerical Investigation of the Influence of Sand Particle Concentration on Long Radius Elbow Erosion for Liquid-Solid Flow

Erosion caused by sand transportation in flow changing devices is a serious concern in the hydrocarbon and mineral processing industry, which entail to failure and malfunction of flow devices. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with discrete phase models (DPM) were employed for analysis of carbon steel long radius 90-Degree elbow erosion due to the sand concentration of 2, 5 and ...

Towards Large Eddy Simulation of Non-Homogeneous Particle Laden Turbulent Gas Flows Using Euler-Euler Approach

A Large Eddy Simulation approach for Eulerian-Eulerian dispersed two-phase flow is presented. It is shown that not only a Sub-Grid Scales term modeling the unresolved field in the mesoscopic momentum transport equation of the dispersed phase, but also a stress term modeling the Random-Uncorrelated Motion is needed. Simulations of a non-homogeneous particle laden turbulent gas flow allow to comp...

Mixed Large-Eddy Simulation Model for Turbulent Flows across Tube Bundles Using Parallel Coupled Multiblock NS Solver

In this study, turbulent flow around a tube bundle in non-orthogonal grid is simulated using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) technique and parallelization of fully coupled Navier – Stokes (NS) equations. To model the small eddies, the Smagorinsky and a mixed model was used. This model represents the effect of dissipation and the grid-scale and subgrid-scale interactions. The fully coupled NS eq...
